At Comely Park Primary School and ELC the development of literacy skills plays an important role in all learning.
Children and young people develop and extend their literacy skills when they have opportunities to:
- communicate, collaborate and build relationships.
- reflect on and explain their literacy and thinking skills, using feedback to help them improve and sensitively provide useful feedback for others.
- engage with and create a wide range of texts.
- develop their understanding of what is special, vibrant and valuable about their own and other cultures and their languages in different media, taking advantage of the opportunities offered by ICT.
- explore the richness and diversity of language.
- extend and enrich their vocabulary through listening, talking, watching and reading. , how it can affect them, and the wide range of ways in which themselves and others can be creative.

How Can I Support My Child's Learning?
Parentzone Scotland’s supporting literacy at home section has simple ideas to support your child in learning about literacy through everyday activities.
Oxford Owl is a great place to find out what your child is learning in English and what you can do to help at home. Get some fresh ideas for practising the weekly spelling words, check out some ways to improve your child’s vocabulary and learn how to put it all together with different writing ideas. There’s also a handy glossary of useful words to help you work out your grammar and punctuation terms. (Please note some information does not apply to Scotland's Curriculum for Excellence)
There is more to learning to read than seeing a word on a page and saying it out loud. We need to understand what we read as well. We can think about learning to read as having two branches:
- Phonics – the mechanics of reading
- Comprehension – reading for understanding

Talk For Writing
At Comely Park, one of the approaches we utilise is the Talk for Writing approach to enable children to read and write independently for a variety of audiences and purposes within different subjects. A key feature is that children internalise the language structures needed to write through ‘talking the text’, as well as close reading. The approach moves from dependence towards independence, with the teacher using shared and guided teaching to develop the ability in children to write creatively and powerfully.
Our literacy work is underpinned by a core reading spine of quality fiction, poetry and non-fiction that all children experience and draw upon.The key phases of the Talk for Writing process enable children to imitate orally the language they need for a particular topic, before reading and analysing it, and then writing their own version. It is powerful because it is based on the principles of how children learn.

1 Plus 2 Languages
Learning a new language encourages children and young people to broaden their horizons as they explore the language and its associated culture. At Comely Park Primary School and ELC we teach French and Spanish in addition to English. Through their learning of a new language:
- children gain a deeper understanding of their first language and appreciate the richness and interconnected nature of languages
- children enhance their understanding and enjoyment of other cultures and of their own and gain insights into other ways of thinking and other views of the world
- children develop skills that they can use and enjoy in work and leisure throughout their life.
The study of language plays an important role in all language learning and the development of literacy skills.
